The 80/20 rule which I’ve talked about in the past seems to have held true in 2008.  With the sharp 40+% declines in most averages I screened for stocks that were up on the year 2008 and closed out the year at $10 per share or greater.  Results, 425 up on the year out of ~3,500 stocks or 12% rose on the year.  That’s, of course, not 20% (the 80/20 rule is a general rule). Perhaps if everything were screened we might be closer to the 20%. 

In any case here’s a list of those that closed out the year with a 50+% gain.
