Searching for Yield and Capital Gains

by: Bill Zimmer November 10, 2010 at 10:28 am

Monday I put up a post showing multi-year (5) new highs. This is a daily update for members.  On Tuesday the number of New Multi-Year highs on the New York Stock Exchange totaled 103 issues.  Eliminating those issues for which I have no fundamental data or are ETF’s culled the list to 89 issues.

Since you hear so much about institutions and individuals that are in search of yield, I wondered if it was dividend yield driving these new multi-year highs? Of the 89 issues 65 or 73% paid dividends and 27% did not. Of the 65 stocks the average dividend yield was 2.47%.  With the 10-year government bond yielding 2.64% (risk free) we can on average eliminate dividend yield as the driving force on this list.

If I go back to the beginning of July, on average these stocks advanced 55% which would have made the dividend yield basis those prices a bit higher. So perhaps dividend yield was a factor to begin the moves.

For your convenience, I’ve put together a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet, containing these 103 issues, with a myriad of fundamental factors, for your perusal. Feel free to download that spreadsheet at the link below – no sign-in required 8-) Do a little analysis of your own, see if you can determine what if anything was the driving force behind the move. Data was gathered from Yahoo Finance and the spreadsheet contains: Beta, Alpha, R Sqr, Historical Volatility, EBITDA / Share, EPS, PEG, BookValue / Share, Div/ Share, ProfitMgn, OperatingMrgn, ROA, ROE, QtrlyRevGrowth, GrossPrft/Share, SlsPerShr, QtrlyErnGrwth, FrwrdDivPerShare, OperCashFlow, LvrgedFreeCashFlw, SharesOut, Share Float, Insider Hld, InstitutionHld, Short, ShortPrevMnth, DivPayDate, ExDivDate, LstSpltRtio, SplitDate
